Do Plaud Transcription Packs Expire? (And What Never Does)

The short answer: yes, eventually. As of July 2026, Plaud's support pages state that Extra Minutes packs must be activated within 12 months of purchase and remain valid for 24 months after activation. So a pack is not forever, but it is far more forgiving than monthly minutes, which reset every billing cycle. This post walks through both clocks, what has no clock at all, and how to stop losing minutes to the calendar.

The two clocks on your Plaud minutes

Plaud meters transcription two ways, and each has its own expiration behavior (Plaud list prices and support pages, June–July 2026):

1. Monthly allowances (Starter and Pro). Starter includes 300 free minutes a month; Pro includes 1,200. These reset every billing cycle and unused minutes don't roll over. This is the fast clock: it ticks twelve times a year, and we did the full math on what that costs in a separate post.
2. Extra Minutes packs (one-time purchases). 600 minutes for $12.99, 3,000 for $59.99, 6,000 for $99.99 (June 2026 list). These don't reset monthly. Instead they carry the two-step rule above: activate within 12 months of buying, then use within 24 months of activation.

In the most patient case, that's roughly three years of runway from purchase to the last usable day. Generous, but still a clock, and one that's easy to lose track of precisely because it's slow.

A worked example, hypothetical for clarity: buy a 3,000-minute pack today and let it sit for the full 12 months before activating; the minutes then last 24 more months, until July 2029. Sounds like forever, until you notice that 3,000 minutes is 50 hours of audio. At a pace of 10 hours a year, you'd transcribe about 20 hours during the 24-month validity window, leaving roughly 30 of the 50 hours unused when the clock runs out. The pack's per-hour price only materializes if your usage fits inside the window.

What the expiration rules don't touch

Worth stating plainly, because it's the good news in the fine print:

• Your recordings. The expiration rules are about unused transcription minutes, not about your audio. Per Plaud's support pages (July 2026), running out of minutes stops transcription, not recording: the recorder keeps capturing and syncing, and transcription resumes when you have minutes again.
• Transcripts you already made. Once a file is transcribed, that transcript exists regardless of what happens to your remaining balance.

What carries the clock is unused transcription capacity: monthly allowances end at each reset, and pack minutes end when their validity window closes.

How to stop losing minutes to the calendar

Practical, in order of impact:

1. Know which clock you're on. If you're on Starter or Pro, the monthly reset is what's eating you, not pack expiration. Check how many of your allowance minutes actually get used; months where you use a fraction are the real leak.
2. If you buy a pack, note the activation deadline. The 12-month window starts at purchase. A calendar reminder at month 10 costs nothing and saves $12.99 or more (June 2026 list). Activation details live in the Plaud app and their support docs; check there, as menus change.
3. Size packs to your real pace. A 6,000-minute pack is the best per-hour price, but only if you'll transcribe 100 hours within the validity window. Buying capacity you won't use inside 24 months is the expiration rule working against you.
4. Transcribe deliberately. Minutes are spent when you transcribe and don't come back if you delete. Skipping the recordings you'll never read stretches any allowance, on any plan.
