Option 1: Stay with Plaud

First, the free version of staying put: if 300 minutes a month covers you, Plaud's own Starter plan costs nothing and needs no alternative. Beyond that, if you live inside the Plaud app (the mind maps, the phone app, the templates) and you actually use the full 1,200 minutes every month, Pro is a defensible deal. Everything stays in one place, and there's real value in that. This page isn't for those owners. It's for the ones paying $17.99 for peace of mind and using a fraction of it.

Option 2: Export manually and transcribe elsewhere (free)

The official app exports a recording's audio (typically MP3 or WAV), one file at a time, without spending any minutes. From there you can run the file through whatever transcription you already have access to, and paste the result into ChatGPT, Claude or your notes app.

When it makes sense: you need this once, or once in a while. It's genuinely free, and for a single important meeting it's a fine afternoon's answer. We wrote up the exact steps in our export guide.

The honest trade-offs: it's manual, per file, and it doesn't scale to "every meeting, every week". You give up speaker labels unless your transcription tool provides them. And if you want Plaud's own transcript instead, exporting it requires having transcribed the file first — the very minute-spending you're trying to escape.

Option 3: Open-source, self-hosted tools

Projects like Riffado exist precisely because Plaud owners wanted their recordings without the subscription: it's open source, self-hosts with Docker, offers a free in-browser option, and bringing your own transcription API key is optional. There's also Plaud's own official CLI, currently free: a terminal tool that signs in once and fetches temporary download links for your original audio, without spending transcription minutes.

When it makes sense: you're technical, you enjoy owning your stack, and you'd rather spend an evening configuring than $6.50.

The honest trade-offs: you're the sysadmin now. Setup, updates, breakage when something changes upstream, and no one to email when it stops working on a Tuesday.

Option 4: Switch hardware

Pocket, TicNote, HiDock and others compete with Plaud directly, some with friendlier transcription pricing.

When it makes sense: your Plaud is dying anyway, or you're buying your first recorder and comparing ecosystems from zero.

The honest trade-offs: it means buying new hardware (prices vary by device) to solve a software billing problem. It throws away a device that works, and it moves your library, past and future, into another company's walled garden, where you're betting the pricing stays friendly.
